Women in Blue Sponsor Spotlight: Cami Bingham – Phil’s BBQ

A longstanding initiative of the San Diego Police Foundation, Women in Blue was created to recognize the achievements of female leaders in the public safety sector and to celebrate gender diversity in an occupation traditionally pursued by men. Since SDPD leads the nation in the percentage of female officers in its ranks, it’s strongly believed that this initiative has been and will continue to be critical to creating a more inclusive and diverse workforce within the public safety sector. Phil’s BBQ serves as the Presenting Sponsor for our 2024 Women in Blue Luncheon.

In this Q&A, Cami Bingham, the Director of Marketing of Phil’s BBQ, shares her connection to the San Diego Police Foundation’s Women in Blue initiative and public safety.

The theme of this year’s Women in Blue Luncheon is “HERstory,” a tribute to the Honor, Excellence, and Resilience embodied by our women in blue, shedding light on the remarkable women behind the uniform. What is your personal connection to this?

I have always been a fan of law enforcement. The bravery they exhibit each day by putting on that uniform to serve the community is something I feel we all should commend. They’re here to protect us and make San Diego a beautiful and safe place to live.

Why do you believe the Women in Blue Initiative is important to our community?

I think the Women in Blue Initiative is imperative because increasing the number of women in law enforcement better represents our community. A diverse workforce can better understand and address the needs of a diverse community and in turn, fosters more positive relationships and trust.

In celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, what advice would you offer young women who plan to become female leaders who may be reading this?

For the courageous young women planning to become leaders in our community, I would say first and foremost “believe in yourself.” Confidence is key! Believe in your abilities and value what you bring to the table. Recognize your strengths and be willing to learn and grow from your experiences.

What attributes of Assistant Chief Albrektsen make her an ideal leader for the San Diego Police Department?

She is a rock star! She has a calming and positive energy that instantly puts anyone she engages with at ease. She is compassionate, kind, and authentic which brings a unique and empathetic approach to the San Diego Police Department. It is truly admirable to commit 40+ years in a department that has traditionally been male-dominant and climb through the ranks as she has.

What motivated Phil’s BBQ to sponsor the Women in Blue Luncheon, and how does it align with your commitment to supporting public safety?

A big factor is honoring Assistant Chief Albrektsen with the Lifetime Achievement Award. She stands for everything we believe in when it comes to our commitment to supporting public safety and giving back to our community. At Phil’s BBQ, it is of utmost importance we ensure a safe and supportive environment for our employees, customers, and community.

How does your organization encourage and promote leadership roles for women?

Having women in leadership roles sends a powerful message about diversity and equality. At Phil’s BBQ, we employ many women in leadership roles and value different perspectives and talents.  Embracing diversity has positively impacted our team, making us more well-rounded, and contributes to the overall success of our business.
