SDPD Veteran Spotlight
Meet Officer Andrew Campbell of the San Diego Police Department, and a veteran of the Marine Corps. As we commemorate Veterans Day, Officer Campbell shares insights into his Military and Public Safety career.
Why did you join the Marine Corps?
Growing up in San Diego County, I was exposed to the Marine Corps from an early age. My father worked on Camp Pendleton, and I remember seeing the Marines and feeling captivated by what they did. Later, when I moved out on my own, my neighbors were all Marines. I often spoke with them, and I couldn’t help but notice the strong sense of brotherhood they shared. Observing this, I realized I was searching for a sense of purpose in my own life and wanted to be part of something meaningful and valuable.
How many years did you serve in the Marine Corps? What did you like most about it?
I served four years on active duty, completing two combat deployments to southern Afghanistan. What I valued most was the bond I formed with my fellow Marines. It didn’t matter who you were, what you believed in, or where you came from— in the end, we would do anything for each other.
Can you share any lessons learned or important principles from your experience in the Marine Corps that you carried forward into your career with the SDPD?
The importance of teamwork was paramount; every mission in the Corps depends on the collective effort of the team, a principle that has become essential in my work now. Each person’s role is critical to achieving our shared goals and ensuring everyone’s safety. I also came to understand the value of treating each member as family. The bond in the Marines is like no other, with each member looking out for the other. I brought this sense of camaraderie to the SDPD, fostering trust, loyalty, and a support system where everyone knows they have someone to rely on.
The Marine Corps instilled in me the values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. These core principles guide how I serve and protect the community. Upholding honor in my actions, having the courage to do what’s right, and staying committed to my duties are foundational to every aspect of my career. These values shape my dedication to service and my approach to leadership, ensuring I always strive to do what’s best for the team and the community.
Why did you join the San Diego Police Department?
“I joined the San Diego Police Department because San Diego is my home, and I’ve always wanted to give back to the community that means so much to me. Serving here allows me to protect and support the people and neighborhoods that have shaped who I am. Being part of SDPD is my way of contributing to the safety and well-being of a place I deeply care about.”
What do you like most about being part of the SWAT Team?
What I like most about being part of the SWAT Team is the strong sense of teamwork. We work together as a tight-knit unit, relying on each other’s strengths and skills to succeed in high-stakes situations. The excitement and adrenaline that come with each mission make the job incredibly dynamic. Every situation is different, offering endless opportunities to learn and grow, whether developing new tactical skills or improving communication under pressure. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a team that’s committed to protecting and serving in such a challenging environment.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I love spending quality moments with my family, especially with my wife and our little girl, who’s now 11 months old. We enjoy taking her outside and introducing her to new sights and sounds. I also enjoy being out in nature, and whenever possible, I like fishing and camping out at Rock Creek Lake.
