SDPD Veterans Day Spotlight

Meet Officer Brittney Janni of the San Diego Police Department, a veteran of the Army National Guard. As we commemorate Veterans Day, Officer Janni shares insights into her military and public safety career.

Why did you join the Army?

I joined the military to serve my country and receive the best possible training for my future career in law enforcement. Joining the Army was the best opportunity for pursuing that goal, while developing discipline, leadership, and resilience.

How many years did you serve in the Army National Guard? What did you like most about it?

I have had the privilege of serving in the Army National Guard for the past eight years. While serving in the National Guard I have been able to help people across the state during natural disasters and emergencies. I also met an abundance of people with diverse backgrounds. Many whom I now consider the most influential people in my life.

Can you share any lessons learned or important principles from your experience in the National Guard that you carried forward into your career with SDPD?

One of the biggest lessons I carried from the military into my law enforcement career with SDPD is the importance of confidence and resilience, especially as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated environment. The Army taught me that competence earns respect and leadership isn’t about gender, it’s about example. I learned to hold myself to the same standards as anyone else while also supporting and empowering other women to do the same. Those experiences built my physical and mental toughness and reinforced the value of never doubting my ability to lead and protect others.

Why did you join the San Diego Police Department?

I have a strong desire to protect and help others who can’t protect themselves.

I have been an officer with the San Diego Police Department for three years. What I like most about being a patrol officer is that every day brings something new. I enjoy being out in the community, solving problems in real time, and knowing my actions can make an immediate difference in someone’s life.

Why are you interested in joining the SWAT Team?

I am interested in joining SWAT because I have always been driven to challenge myself and operate at the highest level of performance. I want to be part of a team that trains and performs with precision, discipline, and trust. I think being part of SWAT would give me the opportunity to grow as an Officer and share the tactics taught to me with other patrol Officers.

What do you like to do in your free time? What is your passion?

I am very passionate about maintaining my physical fitness and spend a lot of my free time in the gym. I also own a hair salon, which allows me to fuel my passion for helping people to look and feel their best. This also allows me to connect with people differently outside of law enforcement.

To all veterans of all branches: thank you for your sacrifice, your bravery, and the example you set for us all. Thank you for your service!
