SPEAK UP for Public Safety

We need your voice.

Our officers are being asked to do more with less. With City budget shortfalls limiting resources, Chief of Police Scott Wahl has made it clear: to keep San Diego one of the safest major cities in the nation, we must equip officers with smart, safe technology that strengthens their effectiveness and efficiency.

One of the most important public safety tools at risk is the Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system.

Over the next few months, the City Council will decide whether SDPD is permitted to continue using ALPR, a proven technology that has been a game changer for a department facing persistent staffing shortages.

Since citywide deployment in December 2023, the system has helped officers respond to crime more efficiently, recover stolen property, locate missing and at-risk community members, and hold violent offenders accountable.

Our City Councilmembers need to hear directly from community members like you about why the smart, safe use of ALPR is essential to keeping San Diego safe.

Learn more about how ALPR works and the difference it’s making every week at: sdpolicefoundation.org/speak-up.

You have a voice in this process. There are upcoming opportunities to share your thoughts and concerns with city leaders:

At 2:00pm on Wednesday, November 12 – The Public Safety Committee will meet and welcome community input.

This will be on City Council’s docket either December 8, 9, 15, or 16. We’ll notify you as soon as the date is confirmed.
