Women’s Leadership Conference: Strength Through Struggle
Today, women in public safety gathered for the San Diego Police Department’s semi-annual Women’s Leadership Conference. Created in 2018 by female leaders at SDPD to help connect sworn and civilian professionals, the conference provides opportunities for mentorship, camaraderie, and professional growth. Each session attracts over 100 attendees, and features keynote speakers and the highest-ranking female officers in attendance.
The conference was led by keynote speaker, Afsoon Johnston, a world-renowned female wrestler. The session’s theme, “Strength Through Struggle,” encourages those who face setbacks to embrace them and push forward. Johnston shared the challenges she faced as a young woman from Iran entering the male-dominated wrestling field and how she persevered. Johnston is the first woman to win a world wrestling medal for Team USA.

The Women’s Leadership Conference is part of the Women in Blue Initiative, a partnership between the Police Foundation and SDPD that provides career development, mentorship, and community engagement opportunities for women in law enforcement.
Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we continue to expand these programs, ensuring that more women have access to the training and support they need to lead.
