A Home Run for Lights On!
On Tuesday, June 13, the San Diego Police Foundation joined the Padres at Petco Park for a “Salute to Law Enforcement,” a dedicated First Responder Appreciation Game. On the field before the first pitch, the Padres Foundation presented a $30,000 check for the Lights On! program.
Lights On! is an innovative community-driven program that partners with SDPD and auto service providers to replace tickets with repair vouchers. To strengthen police-community relations, this program stimulates positive interactions between police officers and the communities they serve, working to restore trust and solve problems. SDPD is implementing this program collaboratively with the San Diego Sheriff’s Office, Chula Vista PD, and National City PD. This program receives funding from the generosity of the Padres Foundation through the San Diego Police Foundation.
At the Padres Community Kiosk, Padres fans met SDPD K9 Officer Simpson and his Mobile Odor Detection canine, Tula. We had the opportunity to visit with fans and discuss our K9 Crimefighters program and Safety For All series. Plus, our spin-to-win wheel included K9 stickers as prizes, featuring active serving SDPD canines, which was a huge hit!
Did you know SDPD’s K9 Unit has been recognized as one of the best canine teams in the country? Last year, the K9 Unit responded to approximately 21,000 calls, working 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the entire city, benefiting all our communities.
For the past 21 years, every police service dog at SDPD has been purchased with funds donated by the community through the Police Foundation. These specialized canines safeguard public events, find missing persons, locate evidence, de-escalate dangerous situations, prevent shootings, and preserve life.
Join the San Diego Police Foundation on August 25 for our Silver Soirée, celebrating 25 years of purpose and partnership. Host a table or save your seat for a memorable, celebratory evening dedicated to America’s Finest K9 Unit. Or donate online to support SDPD’s key priorities and critical needs, such as our beloved police dogs.
